One thing we all take for granted is the four points of the compass. After all, “East is East”! However, Jerry Brotton professor of Renaissance studies at Queen Mary’s University will make you see things differently.
His latest book Four Points of the Compass investigates how North, South, East and West are not just objective coordinates but deeply subjective with cultural and moral frameworks which have been shaped by different civilisations across history.
You’ll learn how political labels drive narratives and come away with an understanding of how and why we orientate ourselves. Jerry will also talk about his book History of the World in Twelve Maps.
Jerry is a regular broadcaster and critic, as well as an author.
He was the presenter of the BBC4 series, Maps: Power, Plunder and Possession
