Maria Cosway was one of the most talented and dynamic women in Regency England. Born in Florence in 1760, she was a prodigy both as a painter and a musician and was central to the artistic and musical culture of the Regency era.
In her enthralling book Out of the Shadows Dianne Boucher brings this much forgotten but brilliant character back into prominence.
Maria’s connections were extraordinary, amongst whom were Thomas Jefferson, the Prince of Wales and members of the Bonaparte family. She was also a fantastically progressive educator, founding schools for young women. In recognition of her achievements, the Emperor of Austria made her a baroness.
Diane Boucher, a Lavenham resident, was Research Director for the Commission for Looted Art in Europe. She later moved to the United States, where she worked at several prestigious institutions.
