Join Paul Thompson from Birketts Law Firm to hear about Literature and the Law at the Swan Hotel, Lavenham.
Literature relies on conflict between ideas and characters and where better is this illustrated than in legal disputes?
Perhaps the most famous example is that of Jarndyce versus Jarndyce in Charles Dickens’ Dombey and Son perhaps the most famous literary description of a contested probate and a withering commentary on the legal profession. Similarly, much of drama in E.M. Forster’s Howards End stems from a homemade will.
Paul Thompson is a Partner at solicitors Birketts. His specialist areas of practice include trusts, tax, succession, estate planning and wills. He is therefore ideally placed to bring his knowledge to illustrate how literature and the law are interwoven and how these issues can be avoided in real life
Paul has practised as a specialist in trusts, tax, succession, estate planning and wills throughout his career. He joined Birketts as a partner in 2024 to head up the Private Client team in their London office. He grew up in Woodbridge and plays cello in his local orchestra.
