Venue information

Monday 10am to 4pm, Sunday 11am to 4pm

Palace House in Newmarket is home to The National Heritage Centre for Horseracing and Sporting Art. The centre celebrates the town’s status as a historic home of horseracing and houses amazing artwork, family friendly activities and exciting exhibitions. Every time you visit, you’ll discover something new!

Originally built by James I in 1606-1610, so he could visit the area for hunting and hawking, the palace was further west on the High Street than the present palace site. In more recent years, Palace House has been carefully restored with a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and support from English Heritage. Forest Heath District Council set up the Home of Horseracing Trust in 2003-2004 to coordinate a fundraising project to redevelop the site and in 2016 Her Majesty the Queen formally opened the National Heritage Centre for Horseracing and Sporting Art.
