Event details

This magical family classic comes to life at Theatre Royal this summer, retold by playwright Nicola Werenowska.

10-year-old Mary Lennox is sent to live with her uncle in Misslethwaite Manor, a vast house on the Yorkshire Moors full of secrets and surprises.

Feeling isolated and alone, Mary rattles around the manor until she meets Martha, Dickon and old Ben Whetherstaff who teach her about the magic of the moors, the creatures that live there, and a garden… what other secrets does the manor hold and why will no-one tell her?

A classis tale of growth, friendship and independence with a cast of professional actors and local young people. Directed and produced in house with support from Bury St Edmunds Town Council.

Mary Lennox arrives at Missellthwaite Manor - a house on the edge of a moor; a house with a hundred rooms, nearly all shut up and with their doors locked; a house full of secrets.

Her uncle, Mr Craven, keeps himself shut up in the West Wing - a man with his own secrets to keep. Mary hates this place. Until she meets Martha, Dickon, and old Ben Weatherstaff, who teach her about the moors and the creatures who live there... and about a garden - a garden that remains locked. Mary starts to settle into life in her new home until one night she hears the sound of a child crying. Does Missellthwaite Manor have one more secret to tell?

Frances Hodgson Burnett’s classic tale of friendship is lovingly re-told by Nicola Werenowska with a cast of local young people supported by a team of professional actors and industry professionals.

Running time including intervals is 2 hours.
