The 100-strong Gaudeamus Chorale is one of the country’s leading non-professional choirs.
They have performed widely in many of the great cathedrals of this country and across Europe. Their concert at St Edmundsbury Cathedral is the final one of three in their 2022 UK tour to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society under the patronage of Angela Rippon CBE. Supported by four fantastic international soloists, the choir brings you a glorious and varied repertoire of much-loved choral music. The second half of the concert features Mozart’s sublime “Requiem”. It is alleged that this was written in 1791 for his own funeral, but the work was not entirely finished by the time of his death in December of that year. It was completed the following year by Sussmayr, working largely from Mozart’s drafts. There remains debate about how much of the work is original Mozart, but there is no debate that the finished piece is one of the greatest choral works ever written.
