Event details

Visit the stunning Kentwell Hall and its amazing gardens - a traditional country house with traditional country house gardens.

Kentwell Hall itself is part of an ongoing restoration project, now in its 50th year. Kentwell remains what it has always been for over 500 years - very much a lived-in and loved family home.

Kentwell is not really a stately home even though it is open regularly to the public. Patrick and Judith welcome you as guests to their home, rather than visitors to a public institution.

The house is a unique example showing clearly the transition from a typical Medieval Hall House layout to be what became a typical Elizabethan open courtyard layout. It also exhibits fine Gothic style interiors by architect Thomas Hopper in the 1820s.

Kentwell therefore is a rarity among historic houses, an essentially 16th century house that has been substantially re-created in the late 20th century by the efforts of one family - an ongoing project of nearly 50 years of non-stop building works.

Kentwell gardens display carpets of snowdrops in early spring followed by massed daffodils and cowslips. There are plentiful wild pyramid orchids to be found in summer, when the walled garden is a riot of colour and the rose garden flourishes. Best of all perhaps the delicate pink American pillar roses which adorn the moat walls.

We advise suitable outdoor clothing and footwear.
