Bury Theatre Workshop, a community theatre amateur company, are performing Speed the Plow by David Mamet at the Unitarian Meeting House, Bury St Edmunds.
Two film producers, Bobby Gould and Charlie Fox, have a chance to make a blockbuster movie with a superstar actor eager to play the lead. Money in the bank!
Enter Karen, the office temp, who persuades Bobby while he is trying to seduce her (or is she seducing him?) that he would be a better person if instead of the blockbuster he made an ‘art’ film about radiation and the end of the world, a film with no box office potential whatsoever.
On hearing of Bobby’s decision, Charlie disagrees violently…
David Mamet’s 1988 black comedy; a tale of greed, seduction and power, is a brilliant dissection of Hollywood’s movie business.
